Everything You Want to Know

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न — फॉरेंसिक विशेषज्ञता के बारे में

Covering questioned documents, signature verification, court testimony, digital forensics, pricing, process, and more. In English & Hindi.

What is questioned document examination and when do I need it?

Questioned document examination (QDE) is a forensic science discipline that involves the scientific analysis of any document whose authenticity, authorship, or integrity is in dispute. You need it when:

  • A signature on a will, property deed, or agreement is suspected to be forged — a common issue in property inheritance disputes across Rajasthan and India.
  • A document has been altered — dates changed, amounts modified, names added or removed after original signing.
  • A cheque has been fraudulently filled — the payee name, amount, or signature tampered.
  • An identity document (Aadhaar, PAN, passport) is suspected to be fake — used in bank fraud, employment fraud, or government scheme fraud.
  • A court document, affidavit, or stamp paper is disputed — the notarial seal, judge's signature, or content may be fabricated.

As a forensic expert with Ph.D. in Forensic Science and experience at SFSL Jaipur, I use ESDA, Video Spectral Comparator (VSC), microscopy, UV/IR analysis, and ink chromatography to scientifically determine authenticity.

How do you detect a forged or fake signature?

Signature forgery detection involves multiple scientific methods:

  • Graphometric Analysis: Measurement of letter proportions, slant angles, baseline, and spacing — unique to each individual and nearly impossible to replicate consistently.
  • Pen Pressure Mapping: Using ESDA and microscopy to examine pressure patterns. Forged signatures show distinctly different pressure profiles.
  • Line Quality Assessment: Genuine signatures have smooth, confident strokes. Traced forgeries show tremor, hesitation marks, pen lifts, and unnatural speed variations.
  • Ink Analysis: VSC differentiates inks of different composition — detecting signatures written at different times.
  • Comparison with Admitted Standards: Disputed signatures compared against multiple genuine specimens using ACE-V methodology.

Findings are presented in a detailed scientific report formatted for court submission under Section 45 of the Indian Evidence Act.

Can you detect a fake will or forged property document?

Yes — fake will and property document detection is critical for families in inheritance disputes. Examination includes:

  • Paper Age Verification: Chemical analysis can determine if the paper matches the claimed document date.
  • Ink Dating & Sequencing: Determining the relative sequence of different inks — detecting if content was added after signing.
  • Executor and Witness Signatures: All signatures examined for forgery and compared with known standards.
  • Notarial Seal & Stamp Paper Authentication: Fake or re-used stamp papers detected through VSC analysis.
  • Document Alteration Detection: ESDA reveals indented impressions invisible to the naked eye.

My reports in will and property fraud cases have been submitted to District Courts and Sessions Courts in Rajasthan. I am available to testify as an expert witness.

What is handwriting analysis and can it identify who wrote a document?

Handwriting analysis (forensic graphology) is the scientific comparison of handwriting samples to determine common or different authorship — a court-accepted forensic science under Section 45 of the Indian Evidence Act.

Common uses:

  • Identifying the author of anonymous threat letters or extortion notes
  • Verifying who filled in a blank cheque or loan application
  • Determining if a suicide note is genuine or written by someone else
  • Dispute over who signed a contract or agreement
  • School/exam paper fraud — verifying the submitted paper was written by the registered student

The examination uses a minimum of 10–15 genuine handwriting specimens and applies 21+ individual characteristics for comparison. Results are expressed as: Identified, Eliminated, or Inconclusive.

Can forensic examination detect if a document was altered, backdated, or tampered?

Yes — modern forensic tools can detect alterations completely invisible to the naked eye.

  • ESDA: Reveals indented writing and exposed content that was originally different.
  • VSC: Uses UV, IR, and visible light to reveal erasures, obliterations, and added text. Different inks become distinguishable under VSC.
  • Ink Chromatography (TLC/HPLC): Determines ink composition and approximate manufacture date — comparing against the claimed document date.
  • Physical Erasure Detection: Chemical or mechanical erasures disturb paper fibres, detectable under UV and microscopy.
  • Page Substitution: Staplings, bindings, perforations, and paper batch analysis can reveal if pages were replaced.
Can you examine fingerprints on documents or at a crime scene?

Yes. Fingerprint examination covers: (1) developing and lifting latent fingerprints from surfaces, and (2) comparison and authentication of fingerprints on documents.

  • Latent Print Development: Using aluminium powder, ninhydrin, DFO, cyanoacrylate fuming, and vacuum metal deposition.
  • Thumb Impression Comparison: Comparing the thumb impression on a disputed will, agreement, or land record against inked impressions using ACE-V with minutiae comparison.
  • Fingerprint Authentication on Bank Documents: Loan applications, account opening forms, and mortgages where thumb impressions are disputed.
  • Criminal Case Fingerprints: Expert opinion on latent prints compared against suspect prints.

I hold specific training in fingerprint science from SFSL Jaipur and have handled actual criminal cases involving fingerprint evidence.

Are your forensic reports accepted in Indian courts?

Yes. My reports are prepared in strict compliance with Indian legal standards for expert evidence, submitted under:

  • Section 45, Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam 2023: Expert opinion on handwriting, fingerprints, and digital evidence is admissible when given by a person specially skilled.
  • Section 293, BNSS 2023: Private expert reports submitted through affidavit with the expert available for cross-examination.
  • Order 26, CPC: Civil courts may accept expert examiners for document disputes.

What makes my reports court-ready: clear methodology, photographic documentation, scientific references, expert declaration, unambiguous conclusions, and full chain of custody documentation.

What is the difference between a private forensic expert and the government FSL?

Having worked inside SFSL Jaipur, I can explain both sides honestly:

FactorGovernment FSLPrivate Expert (Nishchal Soni)
Turnaround Time6 months to 2+ years7–21 days typically
AccessibilityPolice/court referral onlyDirect — lawyers, individuals, companies
Civil CasesOften unavailableAvailable for all civil matters
Second OpinionNot possibleAvailable — challenge FSL reports

Private expert reports are fully admissible in court. The Supreme Court and various High Courts have upheld the evidentiary value of private forensic experts under Section 45 of the Evidence Act.

Can you challenge or counter a government FSL report in court?

Yes — and this is one of the most valuable services I provide. Having worked inside SFSL Jaipur, I understand exactly how government forensic reports are prepared, what shortcuts are sometimes taken, and where methodological gaps may exist.

Grounds on which FSL reports can be challenged:

  • Insufficient comparison specimens (fewer than the required number of standards)
  • Failure to use appropriate instrumentation (VSC, ESDA) and relying only on visual examination
  • Inconclusive results presented as definitive opinions
  • Chain of custody gaps in evidence handling
  • Expert not having required qualifications in the specific discipline
  • Opinion overstated beyond what the scientific findings support

I prepare a detailed counter-expert report and can testify as a defence expert witness to challenge the FSL expert during cross-examination.

What is BSA 63 and how does it apply to forensic evidence?

Section 63 of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) 2023 deals with the admissibility of electronic records and digital evidence in Indian courts. It replaced Section 65B of the old Evidence Act.

  • Electronic records (WhatsApp, emails, CCTV, call records) are admissible if accompanied by a certificate under Section 63(4) confirming authenticity.
  • Without a proper BSA 63 certificate, electronic evidence may be challenged or rejected.

How I help: I assist lawyers in preparing BSA Section 63 certificates, examine digital evidence to verify integrity, and can testify as an expert witness on BSA 63 compliance.

Do you provide expert witness testimony in court?

Yes — providing expert witness testimony is a core part of my forensic practice. After submitting a forensic report, I am available to appear personally in court to present and defend my findings.

  • Pre-hearing Preparation: I meet with your lawyer to review the report and prepare for cross-examination.
  • Examination-in-Chief: I present qualifications, methodology, findings, and conclusions clearly to the judge with visual aids.
  • Cross-Examination: I answer questions from opposing counsel confidently, maintaining scientific accuracy.
  • Affidavit Filing: Where personal appearance is not immediately required, I provide a sworn affidavit filed with the forensic report.

I have testified in District Courts and Sessions Courts in Rajasthan. My qualifications — Ph.D. in Forensic Science, UGC-JRF, Ex-SFSL Jaipur — lend strong credibility to expert testimony.

Is Nishchal Soni ISO certified? What is the ISO 9001 certification?

Our forensic services operate under an ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System framework — the internationally recognised standard for quality management.

  • Documented Procedures: Every step of evidence handling, examination, and report preparation follows standard operating procedures.
  • Chain of Custody: ISO 9001 compliance reinforces our evidence handling protocols.
  • Client Communication: Defined processes for consultation, progress updates, report delivery, and post-delivery support.
  • Record Keeping: All case records, examination notes, and reports maintained securely.

This ISO certification, combined with Ph.D. qualifications and SFSL Jaipur experience, means clients receive forensic services meeting both scientific and quality management standards.

What is digital forensics and what types of digital evidence can you examine?

Digital forensics is the application of scientific methods to recover, preserve, and analyse data from electronic devices in a legally admissible manner. I can examine:

  • Mobile Phones (Android & iOS): Call logs, SMS, WhatsApp messages (including deleted ones), photos, videos, location history, app data.
  • Computers & Laptops: Deleted files, email archives, browser history, USB logs, user activity timelines, malware evidence.
  • CCTV & DVR Systems: Video extraction, enhancement, timestamp verification, and authentication.
  • Email Accounts: Header analysis to trace actual sender IP, metadata examination.
  • Social Media: Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Telegram — profile activity, messages, fake account identification.
  • Banking & Financial Records: Digital transaction logs, UPI fraud trail, online banking evidence.

All digital evidence collected using write-blocked forensic imaging. Chain of custody maintained throughout. Reports meet BSA Section 63 requirements for court admissibility.

Can deleted WhatsApp messages or call records be recovered?

This is one of the most common questions — the honest answer is: it depends on the specific circumstances, but yes, recovery is often possible.

WhatsApp Messages:

  • WhatsApp creates local backups on Android devices. Forensic tools like Cellebrite UFED and Magnet Axiom can extract these and recover deleted chats — even from backups the user cannot access.
  • On iOS, WhatsApp data is stored in the device backup. With lawful access, deleted messages can often be recovered.

Call Records:

  • Call logs deleted from the phone can often be recovered from device storage using forensic imaging.
  • For carrier-level CDR (Call Detail Records), a court order is required from the telecom provider. I can assist lawyers in preparing such applications.

All recoveries performed using write-blocking hardware to ensure original data is never altered.

What is deepfake detection and how can forensic science identify a fake video?

Deepfakes are AI-generated or manipulated videos increasingly used in defamation, extortion, and cyber harassment cases. Forensic detection uses:

  • Metadata Analysis: AI-generated videos often lack natural metadata or show inconsistencies.
  • Compression Artefact Analysis: Using Amped Authenticate to examine DCT coefficient patterns — AI manipulation introduces specific artefacts.
  • Facial Landmark Analysis: AI face-swap systems show detectable inconsistencies at hair boundaries, ear regions, and extreme angles.
  • Temporal Consistency: Frame-by-frame analysis reveals unnatural flickering, blending errors, and frame-rate inconsistencies.

I have published peer-reviewed research on deepfake detection in the ARC Journal of Forensic Science (2025) — applying the most current scientific methods to your case.

Can CCTV footage be enhanced and authenticated for court use?

Yes. I provide CCTV and video forensics using Amped FIVE (industry standard for law enforcement) and Amped Authenticate.

Video Enhancement:

  • Resolution enhancement using super-resolution algorithms
  • Deinterlacing, contrast optimisation, stabilisation
  • Face and license plate clarification

Video Authentication:

  • Detecting whether footage has been edited, cut, looped, or spliced
  • Verifying DVR/camera timestamp integrity
  • Identifying the recording device through video fingerprinting
  • Metadata extraction and verification

All procedures are documented step-by-step. Enhanced footage and original are preserved separately with full chain of custody.

How do I send my documents or evidence to you for examination?
  1. Initial Consultation (Free): Call or WhatsApp on 7009468081 or email [email protected]. Describe your case — I will tell you immediately whether forensic examination can help.
  2. Evidence Packaging: Original documents in a clean polythene sleeve. Do not fold or write on the document. For digital devices, do not attempt to access or reset.
  3. Courier or In-Person Delivery: Documents sent by registered post to our Ajmer office, or brought in person. For Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, or Delhi clients, I can arrange a meeting at a convenient location.
  4. Receipt and Chain of Custody: Upon receipt, I issue a signed receipt describing the evidence and its condition. Chain of custody is initiated immediately.
  5. Examination and Report: 7–21 days depending on complexity. You receive a detailed forensic report with findings, photographs, and expert conclusion.
  6. Evidence Return: Original evidence returned in sealed packaging with a signed return receipt.
How long does a forensic examination take and what does the report contain?

Turnaround Time:

  • Simple signature/handwriting comparison: 5–10 working days
  • Questioned document examination (alteration, ink, paper): 10–21 working days
  • Digital forensics (mobile/computer): 7–15 working days
  • Video/audio forensics: 7–14 working days
  • Complex multi-document fraud cases: 21–30 working days
  • Urgent/court-deadline cases: discussed individually (expedited available)

What the forensic report contains:

  • Case reference number and date of examination
  • Description of evidence received (with photographs)
  • Instruments and methodology used
  • Detailed findings with annotated photographs and comparative charts
  • Expert opinion and conclusion (clearly stated)
  • Qualifications and declaration of the expert
  • Chain of custody record and all annexures

The report is delivered in print (signed and sealed) and as a PDF. A separate affidavit for court filing is prepared on request.

What is chain of custody and why is it critical in forensic cases?

Chain of custody is the documented, chronological record of who handled a piece of evidence, when, and what was done with it at each stage. It is critical because:

  • If chain of custody is broken, opposing counsel can argue evidence was tampered with — making even a correct forensic finding challengeable in court.
  • BSA 2023 / BNSS 2023 require that evidence produced in court can be traced from source to courtroom without unexplained gaps.

How I maintain chain of custody:

  • Signed receipt on evidence arrival with unique case reference number
  • Examination log — every procedure recorded with instrument, time, and examiner
  • Photographic documentation before, during, and after examination
  • Secure storage when not being examined
  • Signed return receipt when evidence is returned
Do you offer online or remote forensic consultation?

Yes. Many consultation and support services can be provided remotely:

  • Initial Case Consultation: Full consultation by phone, WhatsApp, or video call — I will assess your case and advise on feasibility.
  • Digital Evidence Examination: Devices can be shipped to me, or in some cases I can guide remote forensic imaging.
  • Report Review: If you have received an FSL or opposing expert report, I can review it remotely and provide written opinion on its strengths and weaknesses.
  • Legal Consultation Support: I work with lawyers remotely to prepare cross-examination questions and understand technical findings.
  • BSA 63 Certificate Assistance: Digital evidence certification guidance provided remotely for advocates.

I serve clients across Rajasthan, Delhi, Mumbai, and all of India. For high-value cases, I can travel to the client location.

What qualifications does Nishchal Soni hold as a forensic expert?

Nishchal Soni holds one of the most comprehensive qualification profiles of any private forensic expert in Rajasthan:

  • Ph.D. in Forensic Science — Lovely Professional University, Punjab (2022–2025)
  • M.Sc. Forensic Science — Lovely Professional University (2019–2021)
  • B.Sc. Forensic Science — Lovely Professional University (2016–2019)
  • UGC-NET JRF Qualified — 5 Times (2021, 2022, 2023) — National Testing Agency
  • Diploma in Cyber Law — Government Law College, Mumbai (2024)
  • IIT Kanpur — Introduction to Cybercrime — E&ICT Academy (MeitY, 2024)
  • FACT Qualified 2022 — Forensic Aptitude & Calibre Test

Professional Recognition:

  • Reviewer: Springer Nature — Scientific Reports (Impact Factor: 5)
  • 10+ peer-reviewed publications in Scopus Q1 and international forensic journals
  • 3 patents filed with the Indian Patent Office
  • 6 copyrights registered | Indian Book of Records 2023 holder
What is UGC-NET JRF and why is it significant for a forensic expert?

UGC-NET JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) is awarded only to the top 6% of NET qualifiers — a merit-based fellowship certifying exceptional research aptitude and subject mastery.

Why it matters for forensic expertise:

  • Qualifying UGC-NET JRF in Forensic Science proves deep, examined knowledge of the entire forensic science curriculum — questioned documents, fingerprints, crime scene investigation, digital forensics, toxicology, and ballistics.
  • Qualifying 5 times demonstrates consistent, verified expertise — not a one-time achievement.
  • JRF qualification is recognised by courts as evidence of academic standing in expert witness assessments.

Very few private forensic experts in India hold even a single NET qualification. Holding JRF five times sets me clearly apart from unqualified practitioners.

What is Forensicspedia and does it affect the expert's credibility?

Forensicspedia is India's leading online forensic education platform, founded by Nishchal Soni in May 2021, with 15,000+ enrolled students across India offering courses, webinars, internship programs, and training resources.

Why this enhances credibility as an expert:

  • Teaching forensic science to 15,000+ students requires mastery of all forensic disciplines — not just specialisation in one area.
  • Forensicspedia's reputation means my name is well-known and respected among forensic professionals, law enforcement, and legal practitioners across India.
  • The platform demonstrates commitment to advancing the field — not just personal practice.

When I appear in court, the combination of Ph.D. research, SFSL government experience, published research, and Forensicspedia recognition creates an expert profile that is very difficult for opposing counsel to undermine.
